Srinagar, Aug 01 (KNO): The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken over the construction of Jammu and Kashmir’s first modern mechanised abattoir at Allochi Bagh, reviving the long-delayed project aimed at introducing scientific and hygienic slaughtering practices in the Valley.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the project, designed to process 5,000 sheep and goats a day, has been floated under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode and is expected to be completed within two years.
The project will replace conventional slaughtering methods with a modern, hygienic and environmentally sustainable system that meets national and international standards.
"The mechanised abattoir will improve hygiene, food safety and environmental management while ensuring scientific processing of livestock," the official said.
The project has witnessed repeated delays since its inception. It was initially assigned to the J&K Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC), where preliminary civil works, including foundation work, had begun. However, construction came to a halt after the financial closure of JKPCC in August 2023.
The project was later transferred to the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, but saw little physical progress, the official said, adding that the delay also came under judicial scrutiny through a Public Interest Litigation related to slaughterhouse infrastructure.
Following a comprehensive review, the SMC decided to execute the project through its own Works Division. A revised Detailed Project Report (DPR), incorporating modern technology and infrastructure, received administrative approval in March 2025, paving the way for fresh execution.
According to officials, the facility will include fully mechanised slaughtering lines, scientifically designed lairage areas, carcass dressing units, chilling and cold storage facilities and by-product processing units.
It will also feature an advanced bio-digestion system integrated with a modern Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) for scientific waste disposal and recycling of treated wastewater for non-potable use.
The mechanised abattoir is expected to improve public health and sanitation, enhance meat quality, strengthen the livestock sector, and generate direct and indirect employment during both the construction and operational phases, the official said—(KNO)
